This is a beautiful hand painted and signed black toleware plate with a deep red fruit motif and gold filigree border. American toleware was a folk art style in which metalware (tin or sheet metal) was lacquered and painted. This item is best used as a decorative tray, either hung on the wall or as a special catchall. It has some engrained dust and paint imperfections - it is 75+ years old! Signed by "ML" in 1949.
